I was a spoiled brat growing up. I am not saying that to brag. I am simply stating fact. My mother and my grandparents (when they were alive) spoiled my brother and me every chance they got. Even when money was tight, my mother managed to give me everything I wanted. If I wanted something, I got it. If I wanted to do something, I did it. My mom rarely ever said â€Å"no† to me. I know that being spoiled contributed greatly to my success as a student. I was given a variety of opportunities a lot of children from the area I grew up in did not have. My mother wanted to make sure I had the best when I was growing. I was an avid reader as well. My experiences and opportunities from Morehead and outside of school prepared me for going to Penn-Griffin School for the Arts (PGSA). I attended PGSA for seven years, sixth through twelfth grade. Like Morehead, PGSA was an arts magnet school. In middle school, I â€Å"majored† in dance and I continued in advanced classes. My class was the first seventh grade class to take Algebra I and the first eighth grade class to take Algebra II. In seventh grade, I started taking voice lessons outside of school. I decided to apply for the high school in eighth grade. Unlike the middle school, the high school was a strictly honors and AP program whose application process included a relatively extensive written application, an academic review, and an audition. I was able to apply with no problems and I was accepted into the high school program. I exceled in high school. I took almost every AP class my school offered and passed most of AP exams. I graduated as valedictorian with an unweighted GPA of 4.0 and a weighted GPA of approximately 4.9. I was the president of Gay-Straight Alliance and class president in senior year. My teachers and counselor supported me 100%. I think it is needless to say that getting into UNC was not a problem at all. â€Å"Listen or not to listen† to music, while studying, is a question that puzzles many researchers, teachers, parents, and of course, us students. There are myriads of studies performed in different countries over the past few decades, and still, there is no single defined answer. Researchers have been able to observe some trends and effects of different type of music on different personalities, while they are in information abortion mode, but have been holding back from a â€Å"one size fit all† conclusion. In some instances certain music can improve our mental abilities to process information, but in other cases it can cause harm. While music appears to enhance learning of some groups of students, it may negatively affect others. In the film, Damnation, the narrator displays the impact of dams in the United States, the minimal benefits and detrimental consequences to the environment. The film provided necessary information of dams that allows individuals to make an informative decision on which side of the argument they want to take. The film positively moved me, especially during interviews where those affected by dams specified their individual experiences. The film provided three different perspectives on the impact that dams have, which consist of the anthropocentric, ecocentric, and religious viewpoints to help viewers take a side on the matter at hand. The purpose of the film is to inform and educate people about the impact dams have on the environment. Lastly, the statistics and data provided during the film really help to put a number figure on how dams have impacted individuals and the environment; by the number of deaths that have occurred do to breaks in dams and by the number of fish that have been depleted in rivers and streams because they can no longer make the journey back to spawn. In Glen Canyon, two archeological teams had limited time to find as much archeological artifacts that they could recover and document sites before the area was going to be flooded. The term they use is salvage, which means the sole purpose of the job is to document cultural treasures before they are flooded by the dam. Everything was going to go under, but at least the teams would have the data and records so that they could make museum displays and write books about the area that no one knew existed. During this time, the stock market boom allowed for growth in consumer spending and the young adult population started to leave traditional values behind in exchange for individualism. In an effort by religious groups to decrease immorality, criminality, and unpatriotic citizenship, the Eighteenth Amendment went into effect in January of 1920, prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages in the United States. The new policy, though opposite of what it was intended for, drove Americans into underground speakeasies, where popular jazz was played into the wee hours of the morning. As speakeasies gained popularity, aspiring jazz musicians moved from the south to the northern cities that fostered their growth, most notably Chicago and New York.
